There are some hummingbirds that hover smoothly and are easier to photograph in flight. I was lucky to come across a very pretty species in the Monteverde Cloud forest.

Micro four thirds lenses for macro photography
When doing close-up and macrophotography a constant consideration is how much depth of field is appropriate to the subject. For my taste, I enjoy having a reasonable subject definition while keeping a good background separation. Continue reading Micro four thirds lenses for macro photography
Simple Subjects, Simple photos
Perhaps I had been pixel-peeping too much… Perhaps it was just the mood of the afternoon… Perhaps I was just tired from work… I just felt like making photos that were not too technical, not too perfect, and not too planned. Continue reading Simple Subjects, Simple photos
Close-up Photography: To focus-stack… or better not!
I think there are two basic types of photographers: those that prefer making images and those that prefer optimizing their photos in the computer. I think I belong to the first type… at least most of the time! Continue reading Close-up Photography: To focus-stack… or better not!
Butterflies Next-door
The good thing about not specializing too much as a photographer is that one can enjoy shooting whatever subject is available. After a walk to a nearby creek and forest a large macro photography scenario suddenly opened for me… Continue reading Butterflies Next-door
Patagonian Water Birds
I was fortunate to spend some weeks in Patagonia and I am very excited about sharing some of the photos I made with you. High in the Tropics
The high altitude rainforest or cloud forest, where the Resplendent Quetzal roams, is the gateway to a world of color amid the clouds and the mist. Further up, above the tree line, is the even more colorful garden called Paramo (or Páramo in Spanish). Continue reading High in the Tropics
The volcano and indoor photos
I live in the Pacific Rim of Fire so it is no surprise that eventually ash is going to fall from the sky, like it has been on and off for the last two years: small amounts luckily. This has consequences for photography of course. Continue reading The volcano and indoor photos
DX vs. FX cameras for wildlife photography
A lot of what I’ve read about using cropped-frame vs. full-frame cameras for wildlife photography is written by people with access to really long lenses, a choice of cameras, and fairly big animals to photograph in the field. I know this is not true for most photographers and I want to write this for them. Continue reading DX vs. FX cameras for wildlife photography
